I didn’t want to let go of him, but the song had ended and people were swigging down the last of their beers and pushing back chairs. I let go of his hand, and his arm dropped from my waist.

“Can I walk you back to your hooch?” he said.

“Yeah. Thanks.”

Mike popped up between us. “Nice meetin’ you, Sam. Good to know there’ll be someone around here to keep this big lug in line.”

“Nice to meet you, too, Mike,”

Mike slapped Jake on the shoulder. “I told her she’s alright, sarge. We’ll keep her around for now.  And I meant what I said. You better keep those flyboys away from her. A face like that can get a girl in trouble.”
