Marcie walked down the sidewalk toward her house, with Darren at her side. Aside from offering to walk her home, all conversation had died between them.

As they came up to her house, Darren stopped on the sidewalk, stared at the house and frowned. "Don't go inside."

"What? Why? Does this have to do with your family business?"

"Yes. Don't go in there. Sleep in your car. Or you can have the couch I've been sleeping on, and I'll take the floor. Just don't go in there."

She turned to face him and slowly walked backward across the lawn toward her house. "What exactly is your family business?"

He crumpled, looking defeated. "Please, don't play this game."
