Chapter Four

Father was still thinking when they drove off the Henry Hudson Parkway and back into Harlem. It was dark now and he

dropped Momma and Roberta off in front of their house, while he went to park the van in its spot. Roberta stood over Pea’s

dish in the kitchen and thought about seeing her in a trap and bringing her home again. She wanted to get her cat and she

wanted to be there when Miss Pea was found. What if Father didn’t understand that? She sat down at the kitchen table when she heard him walking down the hallway.

She looked up nervously when Father came in and sat down next to her.

“Ok.” He began, “You don’t have to go to school tomorrow.”

Roberta cheered and Father smiled at her.
