Now that the body was returned to the family for burial, Joseph remembered his promise to his father and knew that he would need to ask permission from Pharaoh in order to remove his father’s body from Egypt and bring the body to the cave of Machpelah in the land of Canaan. His father Jacob had earnestly requested this one last dying wish and Joseph was determined to honor his father by making sure that this request did not go unanswered. As he entered the palace courtyard, he was greeted by Pharaoh's attendants and Joseph asked to speak to the king’s council regarding the burial of his father.
