A Moon for Mike

for Mike Stone, in response to his poem "Walking to the Moon"

I'll walk with you now,
our shadows telling stories
up ahead, whispering
their secrets
to one another, as we
stumble on, astride.

The light retreats behind us,
leaving fields to settle beneath the scent
of memory, the cooling touch
of a lovely lingering promise.

Ahead, the silver lash of
light reflected
makes meaning of the sky;
this moon a beacon for all poets
who've walked such solitary paths.
