Afternoon shade withers
across the folds of buttercream
cotton, the dark stained boards
over which you placed the edges
of the sheets with
the careful imprecision
of a huntress,
covering her scented tracks.

You know I’m watching you,
you want us
to be watching you,
it’s the only thing
you know can fill
this empty space the light
merely grazes,
filtered as it is through
paper shades and
the flicker of blue
light in the dark.
