these memories stab

splinters in the flesh of present

the past, sunk deep, won’t be dug out

its poisonous coating contains sweet pain

old faces and places seep into current concerns

we cling to the debris in the shipwreck of the years behind

fragments of lives and times adrift in a sea of the daily grind
