I keep up this pace

     this death march

to outrun doubt, though

I was outflanked by it today.

it paralyzed me with its assault

     severed the spine of my nerve

I haven't felt this fear in a while

     a cold slick of it just under skin

I've been avoiding this hollowing because

it baffles all direction and momentum…

but I always find a way out of this foxhole

   to start the double-time again

If I can just keep moving

     lift those feet

     pump those legs

I can stay just ahead of it

     even if it's snapping at my heels
