too rough and Bennett hobbled home, shame inking through her blood, thanking a god she frequently denied that she’d made it out of that one alive. Or about the times she snuck out a back door when a wife got home too early. Or all the times she sat waiting for test results.

 

She’d thought that Gran would always be there, as her safe haven, her backstop, her font of wisdom. She knew that every single question Gran ever asked her really amounted to the same thing.
