     The fire, in the fireplace, crackled as Christine set her loaf of bread on the rack, right above the flames.  She talked so happily to Dessie, in her highchair, and the child cooed and giggled back at her.  She got the salt pork out of the cellar, and set it out.  She’d fry it, as soon as they got home from picking Ryan up at the train station.

     “Oh, Dessie, your Pa is going to be so shocked when he sees how big...
