passed by, along with cannons and their platforms.  Machine guns, that looked like they were hooked onto backs of new cars, rolled by them.  Wheels all had to turn pretty fast or they’d get stuck in the deep mud there on shore.  He looked up at the loud noise and saw simple airplanes, things that looked like birds, with one front wheel or two wheels, a propeller, and color.  They had funny sounding names and noises.  They made white or black smoke in the sky and some even dropped bombs.  Adam tried to take it all in, but just couldn’t.  It was so overwhelming for a country boy to all envision at once.  The noise was so loud, he thought his eardrums might burst.  Then, his thoughts were interrupted by a louder voice.
