When she arrived at the office, Adam’s head was buried deep in a medical book.  Dessie came up behind him, put her arms around his waist, hugged him to her, and strained on her tiptoes, over his shoulder, to see what he was reading.

     “Whatcha readin’?” Dessie asked, a little teasingly.

     Adam turned his head, kissed her good morning, then sat her down at the table to explain.  He stared at her for a few moments before speaking.  How grown up she looked, with her hair upswept, her face not the face of a little girl anymore, but of a young woman.  Even all her eyes beheld, they saw through a lady’s eyes, not a child’s.  How much he had missed her in his absence.  But now, he w...
