He didn’t want conversation.  “They’re together now.  I just let him off at the door to the office.  Told him I had to get back.”

     His sentences were short and he did not elaborate, no reason to.  Christine waited for more, but then realized there wasn’t any, so she turned to a jabbering baby, smiled, and talked baby talk to her.  Amber giggled as if her ma gave her the wrong answer to a question.  Christine thought maybe she did.  Then, Ryan said one more thing before he went back outside.

     “By the way, I invited them for dinner, well, him, anyway, and told Dessie to come home,” he said gruffly.
