     “How long was Adam gone?” asked a great grandchild waiting for an answer with bated breath.

     “I will tell you,” Christine told them with wide eyes, leaning to them just a little.  “Ryan and I knew it was real now, that our little girl was getting married.  She was wearing his ring.”  Christine paused then spoke again, her gaze at something far away, as if she was watching it all happen again from a distance.  Her eyes were wide, intent.  “Adam was gone a month longer.  He still sent Dessie telegrams and said he was wrapping up the business in New York he had gone there for.  And he’d tell her all about it when he arrived home.  She missed him terribly, and spent every day...
