and he’d make her happy, he promised himself, he’d try, he knew her well, and he knew he could make her happy.  They’d be together, raise a family, work on the farm with her ma and pa when they weren’t doctoring.

     Adam drew back and held her hands in his.

     “I’ll get you a ring as soon as I get your pa’s blessing.”

     “You haven’t asked Pa yet?” Dessie asked, a sly smile tugging her mouth, mischievously so.

     “Not yet.  I wanted to ask you first.”

     Dessie smiled and tilted her head slightly to one side.  Her smile and gaze at him was shy, yet teasing.
