Dessie took a deep breath in and turned over the paper to reveal and “E” for “Excellence” and only two red marks on two different problems.  She let out her breath and quietly thanked God for her great mark.  An “E”!  She was so relieved and satisfied with herself.  And she had done it under pressure and half asleep.  She’d be all right now. She went through those problems again, seeing her mistakes.

     Right after lunch recess, David’s pa burst into the schoolroom doors.  Everyone looked back at the out-of-breath man, trying to speak.  He did, and his words were quick, nervous, terrified.
