Cal was doing coursework today so I took Hannah and Jamie to visit Dad at the allotment. Since he insulated the shed and picked up a camping stove he’s been spending most of his afternoons there with a band of older blokes we call the Allotment Avengers.

They share tips about gardening along with cups of tea. Nothing grows in Ireland in February so I reckon they’re avoiding their wives. If they’re at the allotment they can’t be given chores at home.

With Cal studying I’ve taken over as Chief Tomato Grower. This, unpaid, position is of vital importance. Or so he tells me. I have been permitted to select the varieties we will grow this year. I picked a yellow one, a small red one, a striped one, and...
