At that second, a gentle buzz started somewhere in Rodgers’ skull. Simultaneously, a grimace appeared on Winters’ face, and his hands instinctively went to his head as he curled inward. It took him a few seconds to straighten and drop one of his hands to his pocket, fishing out his cell phone and saying something into it.

A wave of cries swept up from the neighborhoods beyond them. They were faint, but Rodgers knew the sound of pained screams. Those screams were accompanied by fervent barking.
