Sayeva pursed her lips. A waitress placed their orders in front of them, then slipped away, barely an intrusion. "Sam and Jamie tell me you were there when they found me. Actually, that you found me."

Winters only nodded.

"Why?" Sayeva asked.

"Why what?"

"Why did you find me?"

He looked surprised by the question. After a few bites of avocado toast, he said, "If my past actions have indicated any lapse of concern for your well-being, you may have misjudged them."
