They cleared the ambush and crossed through a backyard. Sayeva started to leap over the wooden fence, but stopped short and then stooped down. Samuel understood and climbed the fence one-handed, with a boost from the hyena.

They made it over the fence fast enough for the demons to lose sight of them. Sayeva trotted over to a house plant and nudged it. Samuel removed the hidden key and unlocked the door, given that Sayeva still lacked opposable thumbs.

Sayeva bounded into her room and Samuel locked the door behind them. Still holding his right arm, Samuel moved toward the nearest sink.

"Stay out of the kitchen with that mess," Sayeva said.
