toward some bushes a few yards away. Samuel tilted his head to the left, and they walked in that direction. A few steps later, another growl sounded, and Sayeva froze. All around them, eyes peered at them through the darkness.

Sayeva returned the growls, then snarled, baring her teeth. The eyes disappeared. She started forward again, leading the way through the brush. In some time, they found a clearing. The forest continued in all directions around it.

They walked on. As they reached the middle of the clearing, a moon rose above the canopy, revealing grey mountains in the distance. A lion entered the clearing opposite them, stepping grandly through the trees.

Sayeva removed her mask and tossed it aside as she stared at the lion.
