of him. "Heads up!" Jamison called, then tossed the shaker to his partner; but, disoriented, he threw it wide and Isabella caught it instead, in a shower of lost granules. She passed it to Samuel, who twisted off the top and poured salt in a line across the living room entrance. The ghost backed away and turned to Jamison, but he scurried across the line, taking care not to disturb the salt as he did.

The ghost screeched at the group, then let out a long, songlike wail.

"What do you want from us?" Isabella asked. The ghost lunged again in response, but repelled itself at the salt. With the social-media-mindedness that so resembles fearlessness in the young, Isabella took out her phone and snapped a photo of the phenomenon.

"Are you okay?" Samuel asked his partner.
