John closed his eyes. “Then, to put it another way, you’ll be putting me in danger.”

“We would have lost nearly an entire drum corps plus our own lives if you had not come to save us. I can’t allow that to happen to anyone ever again.” Sayeva raised her chin.

Meeting her gaze, John stepped forward. “Do not make an enemy of me, Sayeva Reardon.”

Sayeva held the gaze but said nothing.
