As society modernized, both Urban and Traditional Nature Spirits began to enter the realm of Folklore, marchen, fairy tales, myth, legend, and eventually, literature. The more humanity turned to organized religion and to science, the more these entities had to be disguised as only borderline reality. But, happily, they don’t go away.
The strongest tie can be seen in the development of griffins and gargoyles. No matter what is the historical explanation, there is no escape from the fact that the current griffin, the way he has always been described and depicted in European cities, looks very much like his counterpart from Babylon, the Utukku.
