The homes of the Roman citizens were also protected by Janus. Among his other attributes and duties in the city, he was considered the god of doorways and beginnings. As he had two faces, he could be inside and outside the home, protecting it from both sides. Janus was assisted by Cardea, goddess of hinges, Limentius, god of the threshold, and Forculus, god of the door leaves.
