When a Water Baby has absorbed and mixed enough energy, it pours it out of its surface center into vortex-like centers in fixed locations in the sea. The energy is distributed from one vortex to another, equalizing the charge. Similar Water Fairies, with some modifications, also live and work in bodies of fresh water.

Fire Fairies have little contact with humanity, and Van Gelder did not know much about them. She was certain, however, that they were involved with clouds, rain, snow, and storms.

In the epilogue to the particular edition I have been studying, written for a reprint many years after the completion of her original book, Van Gelder claimed that at that time (1977), there were fewer Nature Spirits, less communication among the group...
