Traditional Nature Spirits seem to have the same duties and character in most world cultures, though naturally, the names are different. It appears they are part of our consciousness in the most profound sense and belong in our communal memory. The prevalence of encounters in legend, myth, oral tradition, and written records worldwide is impressive. Much of the material of marchen (the German term for tales of enchantment) and fairy tales involve adaptation of encounters with Nature Spirits.

Many are pure personification of nature. A Dryad, for instance, is the spirit of the tree. The Undine is the personification of water.
