It had been the last thing he had looked at as he left his office, almost certainly for the last time. Janos Szabo had stared hard at the photograph on the wall and thought of what might have been. There he was on the front row, along with all the other officers from the training college. Everyone was smiling; except one. The man on the back row glowered, his eyes glared evil. If only I had never met him! I could have had a good life here! Hartleydale has its attractions and, who knows? Diana and Szabo might have made something of their relationship. But that stalled before it started. She had to die. Szabo had pleaded for Diana to be spared, but Nagy[1] said it had to be otherwise. At least he had not been the one who murdered her.
