Midnight. Hartley Town Hall clock confirmed the hour with its dull chime. It had been raining since teatime the previous day. The heating had gone off in the safe house. To keep warm, Pauline Philbey had flicked on an electric heater in the bedroom which had now become her base room. She liked a special place where she could carry out her investigations. It was exciting to be doing detective work. And this was no ordinary enquiry,
