Donald May felt like an errant schoolboy as he sat outside the ACC’s office. He had never been in trouble with anyone – apart from his dad – and never intended to be, though he had come close in 2019 when his handling of the Holme Hill murders had been criticized. That had been such a complex case, with far-reaching consequences that nobody could ever have envisaged. Was William Clair’s murder – if it was a murder – going to be any easier to solve. Those brothers had a shady reputation. May thought back to the rumours of the 1970s. Nothing had ever been proven, and no doubt nothing ever would. Nevertheless, the DCI made a mental note to check back through the files from the day, assuming anything was still available.
The door opened.
