As a young girl, I thought that Granny Cake was called Granny Cake because my Granny baked it.  It was a favorite of hers.  Imagine my thoughts when my Mom said that she was baking a Granny Cake.  I told her that she couldn't bake a Granny Cake, if she baked a cake it would be a Mommy Cake. She then told me if I baked a cake it would be a Baby Cake.  

This family favorite was a dessert staple at every family get together, which was often with our family.  It was also a regular to fix for someone in the community when there was a death or a birth or anytime a dessert was needed.  It is very easy to transport to functions because it is usually served straight from the baking pan and there's no frosting or icing that can possibly get messed up in transit.
