lifting the captain up proved to be quite difficult. We were still about 20 feet below the opening through which I entered. He needed to wake up. I tried to shake him awake.

         “Captain!” I yelled. “Captain! You need to wake up!”

Then I felt a disturbance in the murky water. It wasn’t the captain, and it wasn’t me.  Something sent a ripple across the surface. I quickly attached the device to another carabineer on my waist. It was as clunky as ever, but there was no time to lose. And then I stopped myself, just for a moment. My body ceased its automatic action and my mind began to question itself.

What was my mission here?

Was it the captain? Or was it the dozens of survivors back on that island? I...
