Charles knew he was tripping balls when he mistook a reflection for bird shit. He’d been staring for a while at the white blotch on the car’s hood, musing on how birds can be brutal on paintjobs, when he finally realized what he was looking at was a patch of light.

“Huh,” he grunted.

Grady glanced over at him from the driver’s seat. “What’s up, buttercup?”

“It’s not bird shit.”

The older man chuckled. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, which probably means you’re in the sky with Lucy and the diamonds.”

Charles snorted and kept staring at the reflection, which had started to release luminous tendrils that drifted up toward the sky.
