After Jack finds the wreckage we see that he immediately begins to help people. It's not through words but through his actions that we see that he is a doctor. He doesn't come right out and say he's a doctor but he seems to know what he is doing. Instead of cowaring and waiting on people to help each other, which they are doing. He is actively finding people to help. It's bred deep in him that it is his job and duty to do this. It doesn't matter that no one knows he's a doctor and he could just ignore people and take care of himself. That's not who he is. It will never be who he is. The show wants to set him up as the hero in the audience's mind straight from the beginning and it really does a good job of that. Then it introduces several other main characters quickl...
