Throughout the rest of the series Elliot pulls us in, asks us questions and makes us feel like we are literally a part of his world. He gets himself in all sorts of trouble and then says to us (the audience) "What should I do?" or "Help me," and it feels like you really really want to. It creates this reaction in our psyche, it appeals to our natural empathy. Most people if they have even the average amount of empathy will be touched by anything they watch or hear, if they are paying attention. Whether they want to or not, whether they admit it or not. You are effected. 

Mr. Robot uses that fact to appeal to the most empathetic of viewers, it's impossible not to feel what Elliot feels, the show is built that way. Not only that but the incredible acting of Rami Malek...
