The mother and father walked towards the side of the house, followed by the driver of the blue sedan. The man in the truck stepped out, not bothering to close his door. He walked slowly forward, stopping in his tracks as his mother screamed. I jumped, dropping the mail in the grass. 

The mother had fainted, falling in a heap. The boy stood with his hands over his mouth. 

I couldn’t help myself, I walked closer; tentatively I crossed the street and stood just at the edge of their yard.
