Within minutes, Garth welcomes the arrival of the quartet. A terrified Rachel is nudged to the sofa with a drowsy but equally scared and confused Mrs. Marshdon. While the others whisper, Rachel helps Mrs. Marshdon return to full awareness. They both notice that Garth and his associates remain eerily calm, seeming to possess a somewhat cold and detached manner, while strategizing in an earnest and attentive fashion. The women sit quietly on the sofa as the others talk. Garth addresses his associates in a solemn tone “I am glad that my concerns were taken seriously so quickly.”
