Lexi came aboard just minutes before the train left the station. She retrieved a book from her bag that she brought along to pass the time. Jesse surprised her when he sat down next to her and struck up a conversation.

“Lex, I can’t believe you’re here too. Are you going to Louisville?”

Her lousy mood increased as soon as she heard his voice. Tessa was supposed to be traveling with her. Her daughter had a headache when she woke up, so Lexi convinced her that she would be fine alone. She already regretted her decision not to delay the trip.
