"We are not alone," his mother told him. "Older beings walk among us. Dangerous beings."

He nodded, stretching his little hands over the small fire in search of warmth for his cold fingers.

"They are stronger," she said. "But they feel as we feel. Envy, and fear, and love, they feel them all. Remember that."

He nodded again, his fingers no longer cold.

"Because they feel as we feel, you can understand them. An enemy you understand is an enemy you can defeat. Remember that."
