In Akan folklore, the traditional beliefs and practices of the Akan people of Ghana and eastern Ivory Coast, the Abonsam is a malevolent household spirit believed to take residence in a home to cause problems and misfortune on the tenants for as long as they remain oblivious to its presence.

Because it’s difficult to know for certain where an Abonsam has taken residency, in many villages, once every year, neighbors hold special ceremonies to rid themselves...
