She tried to tell the doctor, but he didn’t believe her.

“No need for surgery. It’s better if I lose my voice,” she said, relieved. Perhaps she had cheated destiny.

The doctor called a consult. Three hours later, she had been put in psychiatric hold. Her surgery scheduled for next day.

“Well,” she said. “No destiny averted for me.”

Nothing else to do now, but wait. Wait and see how long they would let her sing, calling on Death, before someone would come to say, “We believe you!”
