But beauty lies. The girl learned as much when the little ball turned around and showed two big, round eyes.

The town mourns the girl. Her mother cries and cries. Her father shakes his head and says, "Give each house a mirror. Teach each child that nothing lovely and harmless survives long in the wild."


The skoffín is the fierce and dreaded offspring of an Arctic Fox and a cat, and it resembles both of them. Yet, attention is needed to this definition, because skoffíns are born from a male Arctic fox mating with a female tabby cat, the other way around—male cat and vixen—would produce a different creature altogether.
