I remember as a kid seeing a VFW sign and asking my dad what VFW stood for. He replied, “Volunteer Fire Women.” Okay, so then I knew. Only, VFW really stands for Veterans of Foreign Wars.

I grew up in Star, Mississippi. I can be a shade on the naive side. We had a volunteer fire department in Star, so I didn’t consider it outside the realm of possibility that the wives of the volunteer firefighters might gather for some refreshments and fellowship on the night the volunteer firemen had their meeting. Right? Well, what would you have thought?

Unfortunately, that was not the only time I would fall prey to my Dad’s sense of humor….
