Summer baseball in Star, Mississippi, brings back many memories. Like riding as a team in the back of pick-up trucks, trying our best to keep our caps from flying off our heads as we rode up Highway 49 to Florence or Plain (as Richland was then called—it was funny to play Plain Red or Plain Green or Plain Yellow) or down to Harrisville. Like remembering the era when wood bats gave way to the new aluminum ones. Like the coach or a parent treating us to ice cream after games that we won (and sometimes if we gave a great effort and sometimes, well, just because). Only after road games, though, because there was nowhere to buy soft-serve ice cream in Star.
