Jaymi slipped on her aviator sunglasses after saying thank you to John in a raspy voice and walked out of the car and into the afternoon sun. It was abnormally hot that day and both girls had stripped off their blazers as soon as they walked outside of school. Now they held them over their forearms and walked side by side up the front porch steps and into the house. When they walked in, the house was so quiet it was almost creepy.

The red-eyed Jaymi pointed out, “She should be here,” and without moving screamed, “Maam, I’m home.”

There was no answer so Rory said, “Should we go look for her?”

“Um…sure,” Jaymi was numb so she just followed Rory through the front hall and up the stairs. “Maam,”...
