When the bell rang, Rory saw Jaymi’s back stiffen even more. It was almost as if her hair even stiffened. Fear radiated off Jaymi’s body. Rory could feel it and she wanted to cry for her friend. Out of the cornerof her eye, she saw the rest of her classmates file out, some giving sideways glances at Jaymi. Most had a look of pity and embarrassment for the new girl. The new girl they were pretty much ordered to stay away from.

But when Jaymi finally turned around, she looked as if nothing happened. “My place afterschool?” When she said this, Jaymi looked like she was gearing up for a mental super bowl.

“Definitely. You okay?”

 “Yup.”

They got up and walked toward the door. Rory won...
