Seth could hear his sister’s cries not with his ears, but with his mind. He was three stories up when he felt the ghost flames lightly warm his arm. He knew he would never get down in time, for his rituals took so much energy, it could take him up to five minutes to get down. The higher amount of stress, the longer it took. There were too many doorways to pass through, too many steps to take, so Seth ran across the room and pushed the intercom button, blaring his voice into all twenty-four rooms.

“Mom, go downstairs quick, Rory’s burning down the house.” He heard his mother rush down the stairs without answering him.

After the intense fight, he finally crossed through four doorways with three steps forward and three steps back, making it twenty...
