The bell rang and she found herself running to find her class. Jaymi wondered, as she rushed down the hall, why she felt the need to make her life so much more complicated than it already was. I’m just like Ronnie. Fucking loser. Those words ran through her head until she rounded the corner and into her first period class. And when she finally found her seat, she realized she had stopped calling her father “Dad” over seven years ago.

Jaymi spent that biology class not paying attention but just remembering that she had already decided, once she was told they were moving, that things were going to be different in Chicopee. They were 200 miles north of San Francisco and it felt like a world away from Los Angeles.
