Ben  raced through the dawn-lit streets of Yonezawa. People’s doors and shutters were still closed tightly, and the only sound were his footsteps on the dry hard-packed earth. He had strapped his father’s sword to his back, and it bounced along. Every time he felt it hit his shoulder blade he remembered his promise.

I’m going to kill him.

He was going to save the honour of his father, and his school. His father had not been fighting earnestly. And to make matters worse he had distracted his father by being a blubbering coward. He was going to find Hattori and challenge the drunkard to his death....
