Marcus shrugged his shoulders.

“I guess so. I mean, I had tried to break the rules—that’s why she refused to see me again. It wasn’t that last reading, as bad as that had been. It was the fact that I wanted her to do it a second time—the exact same question. I didn’t like the answer that I had been given.

“At the time, it didn’t make any sense. It was so vague. At least that’s what I have been telling myself. But as I stand here before you, processing everything that you’ve just said, I realize that the truth of it is that I was just damn scared of what it all seemed to say—of what it meant for me.”

Tim attempted to speak but Marcus held up a hand.
